Advanced modelling of membrane filtration

Filtration of activated sludge in membrane bioreactors (MBR) is not yet fully understood, and as a consequence, fouling control is very conservative. In this project, computational fluid dynamics (CFD) and an individual-based model will be used in conjunction with high-resolution measurements for filter cake topography to characterise the development of a filter cake on a membrane. The model will be used to gather in-depth knowledge on the process and study the influence of process conditions and external factors on the heterogeneity of the cake and thus performance of the filtration.
